Welcome to ELSA Umeå, a vibrant student city in northern Sweden where academic life meets breathtaking nature. Located close to the Arctic Circle, Umeå offers a unique combination of an active student community, a welcoming atmosphere and the distinctive character of northern Sweden. Depending on the season, participants may experience snowy landscapes, frozen lakes and the magic of long summer evenings. During the Study Visit, you will have the opportunity to discover Swedish legal education, meet local students and professionals, explore the city and its surroundings, and experience the traditions and everyday life that make studying law in Umeå truly special.

Methods of getting from the airport(s)/train-station to the City Centre/Hotel

Umeå is well connected by air, train and bus. Umeå Airport is located only a few kilometres from the city centre and can be reached by local public transportation or taxi. From the airport, participants can use local bus connections to reach the city centre and the university area. Umeå is also accessible by train, with connections to several major Swedish cities, including Stockholm. Long-distance buses are another option for travelling to Umeå. For transportation within the region, Bus Line 80 is particularly useful as it connects Umeå with destinations in the surrounding area. Local public transportation in Umeå is operated by Ultra, making it relatively easy to travel between the city centre, the university and other locations included in the programme. We would of course provide participants with more detailed transportation information before the Study Visit and help them plan their journey to Umeå.

Draft Academic Programme

In addition to visiting Umeå University and the Faculty of Law, we would like to offer participants an insight into both legal education and the Swedish legal system.

Depending on availability, the academic programme could include:

A guided visit to the Umeå University Faculty of Law
Lectures or seminars with students, researchers or professors
A presentation about studying law in Sweden and the Swedish legal education system
A visit to a local law firm or meeting with practising lawyers
A visit to a Swedish court, with the possibility of attending a public hearing
Meetings with relevant local institutions or public authorities
A presentation about the Swedish legal profession and possible career paths
A workshop or legal case simulation where participants can work together on a practical legal problem
An opportunity to meet ELSA Umeå members and learn more about our activities and the local group

The exact programme would depend on the availability of external institutions and speakers, but we would aim to create a varied programme combining academic content, professional insight and interactive activities.

Draft Social Programme

We would also like participants to experience Umeå beyond the university and discover some of the culture and lifestyle of northern Sweden.

The social programme could include a guided walk through central Umeå and along the Ume River, giving participants the opportunity to see some of the city’s characteristic surroundings. We could also visit local cultural attractions such as Bildmuseet, Umeå’s contemporary art museum, and Västerbottens Museum, which offers an insight into the history and cultural heritage of northern Sweden.

Depending on the season, we could also organise activities connected to the local nature, such as a walk in the surrounding forests, a visit to a frozen lake during winter, or other outdoor activities.

Of course, no Swedish experience would be complete without fika! We would be happy to introduce participants to this important part of Swedish social culture by visiting some of Umeå’s cafés together.

Other possible activities include a traditional Swedish dinner, an informal ELSA social evening, exploring the city centre and, depending on the season and weather, experiencing some typically northern Swedish activities.

Overall, we would like the Study Visit to combine law, culture, nature and social interaction, giving participants the opportunity not only to learn about the Swedish legal system but also to experience what student life in northern Sweden is like.
